Shipyard Grading involves assessment of the financials strength of shipyard companies. While, Ministry of Defense (Indian Navy), has the necessary expertise/ mechanism to undertake the capacity/ infrastructure assessment of the private shipyards, it was decided that the task of assessing the financial strength of these private shipyards has been assigned to reputed credit rating agencies such as CARE, given credit rating agencies’ knowledge and expertise in financial risk assessment and understanding of the market dynamics.

CARE through its shipyard grading service, assesses the financial strength of shipyard companies. Grading is provided on a scale of 1 (One) to 8 (Eight). (One being the Highest; Eight being the Lowest). The grading is useful for shipyard companies, for participating in numerous contracts for various types of ships given out by the Ministry of Defense (Indian Navy).
